After talks with Pashinyan in Paris, French President
Emmanuel Macron staged a show of positivity.
His Twitter feed became a celebration of peace, love, and
friendship: Macron expressed support for peace between Baku and Yerevan and
spoke about "a new page in the history of the region."
"The signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and
Azerbaijan as soon as possible will open a new chapter for all countries and
peoples of the region and beyond," Macron wrote.
But not a word about how he previously disrupted these
negotiations — how he provoked Baku and put that very "new chapter"
at risk.
Let’s be clear: it was without intermediaries, especially
Macron, that Azerbaijan and Armenia made real progress. In fact, it's ONLY
possible to negotiate WITHOUT intermediaries. The moment "helpers"
like the French president stepped away, talks began to move forward. And every
time so-called "moderators" who claimed to care about the region’s
future got involved, the negotiations stalled.
Now, with Baku and Yerevan close to finalizing an agreement,
political outsiders like Macron are trying to insert themselves into the
process.
To Macron and others: if you truly want to help — stay quiet
and don’t get in the way.
