Macron kicked out of Niger

21 June 2025 [11:11] - TODAY.AZ

The African backbone of the French neocolonial empire continues to crack at the seams: the authorities of Niger have officially nationalized Somair, the key uranium asset of the French nuclear giant Orano.

This is the same uranium that French nuclear power plants have been using for decades, while Africans remained in the shadows and without dividends. But the days of the "civilizing mission" are finally over — now France has been kicked out the door.

The divorce from Paris began in 2023, and now it is legally formalized — without sentiment. Since December 2023, the mining license has expired, and the French representatives of the company have effectively been removed from management.

The company began arbitration and lawsuits in an attempt to regain control, but now the authorities of Niger have put a fat, radiantly shining dot: Orano is no longer the owner of its uranium "plantation."

Somair provided a critical reserve of uranium for the French nuclear industry — 63% of the shares were controlled by the French. Now, adieu, monsieur!

France will have to look for uranium in more expensive and unstable jurisdictions — in Canada, Mongolia, Namibia. And there, you know, there isn’t that colonial atmosphere. They'll have to pay, negotiate, and maybe humiliate themselves.

A holy place is never empty: Russia and China are already eyeing the assets taken from France. It is unclear who will be preferred by the government of Niger, but the fact that Macron has added to the headache is obvious.
