There is a catastrophe in the Armenian capital — there is no
more space in cemeteries, and no one plans to expand them.
Cemeteries in Yerevan occupy 500 hectares of land, but the
authorities have already stated that there will be no expansion, as it is much
more profitable to sell the land in the city for construction.
Armenians continue to die, and this trend shows no sign of
stopping. In two years, most cemeteries will partially close, as the director
of the NGO "Special Public Services" told reporters. As a result,
there will be a lack of space to bury the dead in Yerevan.
Cremation could solve this problem — the law allowing it was
passed almost 20 years ago. However, there are still no crematoriums in the
country, and the Armenian Church continues to strongly oppose it.
As a result, a new social movement is emerging, demanding
the construction of at least a few crematoriums in Armenia. Otherwise, society
will have to find new ways to bury the departed, while the living continue to
fight for precious square meters.
