Ombudsman calls to recognize Khojali tragedy as genocide

21 February 2006 [13:20] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human rights (Ombudsman), Elmira Suleymanova issued a statement on the 14th anniversary of Khojali genocide.

As APA reports, the statement reads that February night from 25 to 26 Armenian armed groups perpetrated a massacre in the town of Khojali in Nagorno Garabagh province of Azerbaijan. This tragedy is one of the most monstrous crimes in the history of wars.

"This massacre led to death of 613 people, including 106 women, 63 children, 70 old men. 480 people became disabled, 1275 innocent people were taken hostages, with the fate of over 150 still remaining unknown.

As a result of this act of genocide, several families were completely annihilated, the people were exterminated with unprecedented cruelty, and those taken captives were subjected to ruthless torture. It was the most terrible tragedy, a genocide in the history of mankind at that night when innocent infants, women, the elderly were killed, a town was completely destroyed.

The actions mentioned above were deliberate and intended to completely or partially annihilate the people on the base of their ethnic belonging. So, according to the international and domestic laws, this proved to be an act of genocide.
The murders and vandalism committed by the Armenian butchers must be regarded in the same way as Khatun and Songmi tragedies recognized by humankind as true genocide.

Peace-loving people all over the planet, the civilized nations, authoritative international organizations, and the global community should be aware of this bitter truth, and that crime against humanity should receive its legal assessment. According to the international law, genocide is the act against the world and civilization, and regarded as the worst international crime.

We hope the authoritative international organizations will support the just position of Azerbaijan, justice will be restored, and the perpetrators of the Khojali genocide will be taken to International Court. The Armenian terrorists and their supporters who committed the tragedy should be brought to Justice, and the authoritative international organizations should impose sanctions on Armenia."
