International organizations to discuss reforms in Azerbaijan

A delegation of the Council of Europe (CoE) has arrived in Azerbaijan because of a launch of the joint CoE and European Commission program on penitentiary reforms.

To discuss the plan of the program activity and define coordinators from Azerbaijani side the delegation has met with some officials, heads of international organizations in Baku and representatives of execution department of the Justice Ministry, AzerTAg reports.

At the meeting held on February 16, Deputy Minister of Justice Vilayet Zahirov acquainted the guests with the drastic reforms of penal system of Azerbaijan in line with up-to-date standards and stressed an importance of the projects implemented together with international organizations.

Margaret Killerby, the leader of delegation, Head of the Crime Problems Department of the CoE Secretariat, positively assessed ongoing reforms in the penitentiary system of Azerbaijan and expressed hope that the program would be successful.

The meeting focused on the plan of joint program of the Council of Europe and European Commission. The sides exchanged views on the possibility to conduct trainings for penitentiary service officers, business trips to European countries, technical assistance for penitentiary reforms.

Alessandro Mancini, program coordinator on legal affairs of the CoE secretariat, assessed ongoing judicial reforms in Azerbaijan, testing and interviews for judges conducted in fair and transparent atmosphere. He congratulated Azerbaijani side on completion of the present selection stage.
