02 February 2006 [17:22] - TODAY.AZ
Ukraine's top security official has said that GUAM, a regional organization of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, should put forth an initiative to ensure energy security for Europe.

The Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Anatoli Kinakh said after his meetings in Georgia on Wednesday that in the present conditions, GUAM should pay particular attention to energy security and there is currently a great need for cooperation among its member states, AssA-Irada informs.

"Considering the surprises we got this winter, energy security issues should be a priority for us," said Kinakh.

The Ukrainian official said that everything will be done to eliminate the political and economic dependence of GUAM countries. "The support of the European Union and the world community as a whole on this issue is of key importance for the organization," he said.

Kinakh added that transportation of energy resources from Central Asia and the Caspian region will allow solving the energy security issue not only for Georgia and Ukraine, but also the entire Europe.
