GUAM: Russian military presence hinders regulation of conflicts in Georgia and Moldova

05 November 2005 [14:48] - TODAY.AZ
"The Russian military presence hinders regulation of the conflicts in Georgia and Moldova," says a joint statement spread by the delegations of the GUAM countries (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) adopted at the meeting of the OSCE Standing Council in Vienna on Thursday.

The representatives of the GUAM countries consider that the withdrawal of the Russian troops from Georgia and Moldova under the decision of the Istanbul summit of the OSCE in 1999 will speed up regulation of political, economic and safety problems, as well as allow an agreement on ordinary armed forces in Europe to become valid.

"Democratization and demilitarization of the separatist regions is the most reliable way of restoration of territorial integrity of the countries, consolidation of their independence and sovereignty," the statement says.

The statement mentioned significant importance of the NATO support in the achievement of the goals.
