Armenia aiming to prevent any progress in negotiations, says Azerbaijan

04 May 2016 [11:46] - TODAY.AZ

The government of Armenia on its session May 5, 2016, intends to consider the so-called bill "on recognition of independence of Nagorno-Karabakh", according to media reports, Hikmat Hajiyev, spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, told Trend May 4.

"Regardless of the results of discussions, it is clear that by such a provocative step Armenia once again grossly violates the norms and principles of international law, the UN Security Council resolutions adopted in 1993, as well as relevant documents and decisions on the conflict accepted by other international organizations," said Hajiyev.

"In its resolutions, the UN Security Council unambiguously reaffirmed that Nagorno-Karabakh is an inseparable part of Azerbaijan and demanded the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of the occupation forces from all the occupied territories of the country," he said.

He also noted that by regularly undertaking provocative actions, including ceasefire violations, shelling Azerbaijan's towns and villages located along the contact line between the country's and Armenian armed forces and the border between the two countries, Armenia aims to 'freeze' the situation and prevent achieving any progress in the negotiation process.

"Without considering the consequences of its irresponsible actions, the Armenian leadership started to prepare for a political explosion of the situation and a complete disruption of the peaceful settlement after getting a crushing response to its military provocations and finally realizing the inability to resist Azerbaijan's growing military power and to continue keeping the status quo any further," he added.

"As part of this peaceful settlement Armenia would inevitably have had to withdraw from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan," he said.

"By these actions the Armenian leadership is also trying to justify itself for the obvious failure of its policy of aggression and occupation," he said. "In favor of its domestic political ambitions the Armenian leadership is trying to meet the demands of some circles of the Armenian society, adhering to the militant and extremist positions."

Hajiyev said that if selfish goals prevail over prudence and this provocation is made, Armenia and its leadership will be fully responsible for the consequences.
