ISESCO presidency transferred to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan will preside in the General Conference of ISESCO, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, for three years.

The decision was made at the 12th session of the ISESCO General Conference in Baku November 26. The presidency was transferred from Saudi Arabia to Azerbaijan during the conference.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse, ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva are attending the session.

President Aliyev addressed the opening of the session.

The head of state said Director General of ISESCO Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri was awarded with the “Dostlug” (Friendship) Order, and presented the high state award to the ISESCO Director General.

Altwaijri thanked the head of state for awarding him with the high state order of Azerbaijan.

Then a Nigerian delegate was presented with the ISESCO Literacy Prize for 2015.

The announcement was made that ISESCO re-elected Abdulaziz Othman Al-Twaijri as its director general.

Al-Twaijri, who addressed the event, expressed his gratitude saying that he greatly appreciates the trust placed in him by the ISESCO member countries.

The session continues with plenary meetings.

The 12th General Conference of ISESCO is held every three years. The meeting will determine the overall action strategy, coordinate and evaluate issues in the scope of the organization, approve the Action Plan and the organization’s budget for the next three years.

Prior to the ISESCO General Conference, Baku also hosted the 36th session of the Executive Council of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on November 23-24.

Azerbaijan is a member of the organization since gaining independence in 1991 and plays an important role in achieving great success of the ISESCO.

Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva is the Goodwill Ambassador of the organization, which is a prime example of high-level cooperation between Azerbaijan and the ISESCO.

ISESCO, established in 1979, is one of the largest international Islamic organizations with 52 member states, that specializes in the fields of education, science, and culture. Its headquarters are in Rabat, Morocco.

The aims of the organization include strengthening and promoting and consolidating cooperation among Member States in the fields of education, science, culture and communication, developing applied sciences and use of advanced technology within the framework of Islamic values and ideals, consolidating understanding among Muslim peoples, and contributing to the achievement of world peace and security, particularly through education, science, culture and communication.
