23 January 2013 [19:41] - TODAY.AZ
Today, the First National Day of Azerbaijan within the framework of "Covenant of Mayors - East" was held in Baku. In the opening ceremony Ms. Khatuna Sichinava from the office of the Covenant of Mayors East in Tbilisi spoke about a significance of “Covenant of Mayors – East’ project.

It aims to inform the mayors of Azerbaijan’s cities of the initiative and commitments on an agreement to accede to it.

Other participants were Farhad Aliyev, vice president of the International Ecoenergy Academy and Ramiz Rzayev, department head of the Industry and Energy Ministry.

The "Covenant of Mayors" was launched in 2008 as a European initiative and aims to promote sustainable energy development at local or regional level and, at the same time, contribute to a secure energy supply for the citizens. Signatories voluntarily commit to increasing energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources on their territories and by doing so meeting and exceeding the European Union 20% CO2 reduction objective by 2020.

To date, the "Covenant of Mayors" has gathered more than 4 416 Cities in EU and more than 49 cities in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. For this reason, in September 2011 the European Commission launched a special project called "Covenant of Mayors -East", establishing a branch office of the Secretariat of the Covenant of Mayors in Lviv and
Tbilisi that will provide dedicated support to cities in the Eastern Partnership, including Azerbaijan.
