Azerbaijan raises its problem of refugees and IDPs at UN session

16 November 2012 [18:22] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan`s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has raised the problem of refugees and IDPs at the Third Committee of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly.

A relevant report was made by Leyla Mammadaliyeva, the Permanent Mission`s Third Secretary, during the discussions on the “Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees”.

Mammadaliyeva stressed the importance of ensuring that all IDPs return to their homelands. She said it was unacceptable to blame disagreements on political issues during armed conflicts and occupations for the impossibility of eliminating breaches of international humanitarian law.
She highlighted Azerbaijan`s problem of refugees and IDPs, which, she said emerged as a result of Armenia`s military aggression.

Mammadaliyeva noted the Armenians conducted an ethnic cleansing policy in Azerbaijan`s occupied lands. She stressed the importance of UN Security Council resolutions and reports of the Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on the human rights of internally displaced persons.

The Permanent Mission`s Third Secretary also highlighted what the Azerbaijani government had been doing to solve the problems of refugees and IDPs. Mammadaliyeva said Azerbaijan remained committed to peaceful talks over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“This would have ensured the return of the IDPs to their homes. But Armenia is undermining the peace negotiations, and is trying to maintain the status quo...”

She noted the necessity of putting an end to Armenia`s occupation of Azerbaijani lands and its policy of ethnic hatred in order to establish longstanding peace and stability in the region.
