A ceremony  yesterday held to launch three church bells donated by the government of Azerbaijan to Concepcion Santisima church located near Khojaly genocide monument in the Tlaxiaco-Khojaly Square in Mexico.

The ceremony was attended by Azerbaijani ambassador to Mexico Ilgar Mukhtarov and embassy staffers, Cardinal Archbishop of Mexico City Norberto Rivera Carrera, religious figures, Azerbaijanis living in Mexico, as well as local and foreign journalists.

Opening the event, head of the church Eduardo Lozano said reconstruction of Tlaxiaco-Khojaly Square with the support of the Azerbaijani government, donation of church bells and the Khojaly genocide monument erected in the Square embodied peace and God`s love.

Ambassador Mukhtarov highlighted Azerbaijani traditions of tolerance, saying representatives of all religions had historically been coexisting in the country in peace and harmony.

Cardinal Archbishop of Mexico City Norberto Rivera Carrera said there was a unique tolerance in Azerbaijan. He said along with Muslims, Christians and Jews also had equal rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan.

Members of the Armenian community attempted to spoil the event by alleging that “Khojaly events were not a genocide” and that “the writing on the monument is not true”. But the act of sabotage caused unequivocal and strong disagreement of Mexican citizens who gathered for the ceremony, and Armenian provocateurs were turned out from the church.
