
A monument to the Khojaly genocide victims has been unveiled in Mexico.
The Kholajy monument was erected after the reconstruction of the
Tlakskoake square, and the park here was renamed Tlakskoake-Khojaly.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by an Azerbaijani delegation led by
Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov, Azerbaijani ambassador to Mexico
Ilgar Mukhtarov, as well as Major of Mexico City Marcelo Ebrard, chief
of the Mexican Parliament`s external relations committee Porfirio Munoz
Ledo, and Mexican MPs.
Addressing the event, Ambassador Ilgar Mukhtarov said a medieval church was also reconstructed in the Tlakskoake-Khojaly square.
He informed the event participants about the Khojaly genocide.
The diplomat hailed the adoption by the Mexican Senate in 2011 of a resolution recognizing the Khojaly genocide.
Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development Felipe Leal
thanked the Azerbaijani government for reconstruction work.
Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov said that as a result of Armenia`s
aggressive policy against Azerbaijan 20 percent of the country`s
territories was occupied and more than one million Azerbaijanis were
subjected to ethnic cleansing.
He also briefed the participants on the Khojaly genocide.
The event was followed by a concert program commemorating Khojaly victims.

He said repair work has been completed at the square and a monument to the victims of the Khojaly tragedy will be erected there.
Abdullayev also said that a monument to national leader Heydar Aliyev was erected in the Park of Friendship of Azerbaijan and Mexico. The opening ceremony of the monument was attended by an Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov. The event was also attended by the chairman of the International Committee of the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico Porfirio Munoz Ledo, as well as those who met with Heydar Aliyev during his visit to the country and other officials.
"The mayor of Mexico City in his speech said that the place for the monument is worthy of the national leader and the Azerbaijani people," Abdullayev said.
The Armenian military forces committed genocide in Khojaly on Feb. 26, 1992. Some 613 people were killed, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 old men.
A total of 1000 civilians were disabled during the genocide. Eight families were annihilated, 130 children lost one parent and 25 lost both. Additionally, 1275 innocent residents were taken hostage, while the fate of 150 remains unknown.
