Azerbaijan has always been close to Russia as a strategic partner and friend for all the years that have passed since the collapse of the USSR, Ambassador Vladimir Dorokhin said on Tuesday at a reception to mark the Day of Russia.

He said Russia and Azerbaijan have many common interests in different areas. Russia, according to Dorokhin, pays great attention to the solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"Russia will continue to assist the parties to continue to seek ways to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and this issue will remain one of priorities for Moscow," Dorokhin said.

Azerbaijani Justice Minister Fikret Mammadov conveyed greetings from the President of Azerbaijan at the reception.

Mammadov noted the high level of relations between the two countries, expressing the hope that cooperation will boost in the future.

This course, the minister said, was started by national leader Heydar Aliyev and is successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev.

"We are two Caspian countries and our cooperation in various fields, including security, of course, will serve to strengthen stability in the region," Mammadov said.

The Minister congratulated Russia on the successes of the football team at Euro 2012 and wished him luck.

The Russian embassy to Azerbaijan held a traditional reception on the Day of Russia.

The event was attended by representatives of state structures of Azerbaijan, heads of international organizations, parliamentarians, ambassadors accredited in Azerbaijan and the media.
