'EP’s resolution on Azerbaijan is defamatory'

25 May 2012 [18:34] - TODAY.AZ
The resolution on the human rights in Azerbaijan adopted in the European Parliament is unserious and defamatory, Head of the Department on Work with Law-Enforcement Agencies of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Fuad Alasgarov said in an interview with Azerbaijani media today.

"Most issues indicated in this document have been distorted," he said. "The date of adopting the resolution also gives reason to say that this document has been made to order. Intensive anti-Azerbaijani campaign in the European media, the actions of Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, our neighbors, synchronous activity of the radical opposition and some NGOs in Azerbaijan once again confirm this. The link in the resolution on "beginning a 10-month campaign on the eve of Eurovision song contest by Azerbaijani human rights defenders" also confirms this."

"On the other side, the resolution has been adopted within the emergency procedures of the European Parliament," he added. "There are many mistakes, unverified provisions in the resolution adopted quickly following approximately 30-minute hearings."

"I think that the European Parliament's position is wrong," he said. "In fact, Azerbaijan, located on Europe's southern borders, is an alternative source of energy for Europe and acts as an important component of Europe's economic independence and security. Azerbaijan is a country integrating into Europe and remaining always true to its commitments. The biased attitude toward this country, the statements made proceeding from narrow political interests are, at least, regrettable. For example, the position of the European Parliament member from Germany Bernd Posselt does not differ from the German media's positions."

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the human rights in Azerbaijan on May 24. The resolution also condemns radical Islamists' threats against participants and spectators of Eurovision 2012 song contest.

"The resolution adopted by the European Parliament, is completely biased," he stressed. "As a "guardian" of democratic values, the European Parliament must think about its authority, must conduct an objective analysis, based on objective sources, rather than biased reports and statements against Azerbaijan voiced by some quasi-human rights defenders acting from personal material interests and differing by aggressive attitude exclusively to the government. The most important thing is that the European Parliament must not distort reality on demand or in the name of any interests."

"It should be stressed that no one, no international organization can influence the policy conducted by the Azerbaijani President in the name of people," he added.
