CoE-Azerbaijan realtions maybe damaged

27 January 2012 [09:35] - TODAY.AZ
Biased position toward Azerbaijan may seriously harm its relations with the Council of Europe, chairman of the Azerbaijani parliament' commission on international relations and interparliamentary ties Samed Seyidov told reporters.

The issue of "political prisoners" in Azerbaijan was discussed at the meeting. Present policy of Azerbaijan and the country's president aims at protecting human rights and it is at least wrong not to notice this policy, Mr Seyidov said.

"Along with members of the committee representatives of non-governmental organizations and human rights activists took part in discussions. Essence of so serious discussions is that it's unacceptable to adhere to biased position toward Azerbaijan and this may seriously harm relations between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe. That's why it is inadmissible to exert pressure on Azerbaijan under the name of "political prisoners". Majority of the committee's members supported this idea and I believe this question will be put in more sharp form at the next meeting. I think MPs of the Council of Europe were informed on work carried out in Azerbaijan in the sphere of human rights and that's why discussions were held in normal and accepted form today," he said.
