Teen's juggling clubs turn out to be bombs

09 August 2011 [09:07] - TODAY.AZ
A 13-year-old boy received the shock of his life after discovering that his makeshift juggling clubs were actually bombs from the Second World War.

Ben Stannard, from Margaretting in Essex, had found the 12-inch cylinders in a farmer's field and began playing and juggling with them.

However, he soon noticed serial numbers on the cylinder casings, and quickly informed the local farmer, who then called the police.

"The police wouldn't go near them," Stannard recalled, according to This is Essex. "They moved everyone away and waited five hours for the bomb squad to arrive for a controlled explosion.

"I was in shock, I feel really lucky. I've learnt my lesson and will always call the police in future.

"I am glad to still be alive and will be more cautious in future," he added.

It is suspected that the incendiary devices were hidden by Home Guard officers during World War II.
