Six-year-old Russian girl cured of cancer after revolutionary treatment in the UK

22 July 2010 [15:17] - TODAY.AZ
When 6-year-old Darya Egorova was diagnosed with bone cancer last fall, local doctors in Russia told her family that amputation was the only option. But thanks to a revolutionary new treatment in the UK and the generosity of a Russian charity, the little girl is cancer free.

When Egorova flew from her native Russia to London for the operation, she became the first person to have ever received the life-saving treatment in Britain, reports the UK's Daily Mail.

During a 3-hour procedure, doctors removed four inches of cancer-ridden bone in her right leg, blasted it with high doses of radiation and then reinserted it back into her leg. Over the next two years, the healthy bone will grow through the dead bone and bring it back to life.

The operation was hailed a success, with Egorova up and about on crutches just two days after surgery, which was carried out at the Harley Street Clinic and funded by a Russian cancer charity, Grant life. Her mother, Irina, said she will never forget the kind people who helped save her little girl's life.

"What the surgeons have done is truly a miracle," she said, admitting: "We came here full of fear but we received such kindness and generosity from the British people. We are eternally grateful."

One year after her operation, the fun-loving little girl who enjoys dancing and sports, is back on her feet and back to school in Russia, with a bright future ahead of her.
