15-month-old boy survives being hit by train

The baby escaped with little more than a few scratches to his face, despite being dragged underneath the city-bound train for several metres.

Black and white CCTV footage of the incident shows the pram rolling quickly towards the edge of the platform before disappearing beneath the oncoming train.
 
Railway operators said that the boy owes his survival to the quick thinking of the train driver, who spotted the pram rolling off the platform in front of him as he pulled into Tooronga railway station and slammed on the breaks. The driver jumped out of the train and rescued the boy, who was stuck face down underneath the first carriage.

The boy's grandmother and three-year-old brother witnessed the incident.

It is not known what caused the pram to roll onto the tracks, but the boy's grandmother, who was looking after him at the time, told paramedics that she only took her eyes off him for a second.

The baby suffered minor bruising and grazes to his face and was taken to the city's Royal Children's Hospital, where he was reunited with his mother.

Kate Jessop, an Ambulance Victoria paramedic who attended the scene, said she was stunned that the boy was not more seriously hurt.

"It's absolutely amazing that this child isn't more injured than what he is, given the circumstances of the accident," she said.

She said the boy's grandmother had been treated for shock and was "very distressed".

"All she recalls is seeing the pram on the platform and then the next time she turned around it was on the tracks. She's had an incredible fright and it's the most miraculous circumstances ... he is as uninjured as he is."
