Azerbaijan's mystical folk music - Mugam - UPDATE - VIDEO

The unique art of mugam is a focus of a new CNN reporting as part of "Eye on Azerbaijan” series. "If mugam is being performed by someone passionately, it can separate him from the physical body and take him into the spiritual world," – renowned Azerbaijani mugam singer Alim Gasimov says.

"Just as scenery for scene, traditional folk instruments are important for this genre of music. Mugam is mesmerizing, rhythmic. And for Alim Gasimov and his daughter Ferghana – mugam is a family passion. Mugam is performed even by the younger generation of this family - the grandchildren of the famous musician," says CNN correspondent Jim Clancy.

Alim Gasimov says the performance of mugam carries him to a spiritual plane. Only after leaving the physical body, he can make the audience approach the spiritual world.
