Israel may skip the next Eurovision song contest to be held in Baku next year.
Thus, the Jewish calendar shows that the date of the contest i.e. May. 26, 2012 coincides with Jewish religious holiday Shavuot. According to the tradition, every Jew should be engaged in reading religious texts and not to work that day. The Israeli legislation prohibits the country to participate in any international events on holidays.
Meanwhile, Israeli public broadcaster ABB addressed the EBU to shift up the date of the contest. If approves, Israel will be able to attend the event. The request should be approved by the EBU, host of the contest and all participating countries.
Due to that legislation, Israel had to skip the contest in 1980, 1984 and 1997.
