Sean Penn blasts Haiti charity cynics

05 March 2010 [10:54] - TODAY.AZ

Sean Penn has slammed people who have claimed that he only undertakes charity work to raise his profile.

Penn, who recently rescued a woman and child on his trip to Haiti, told CBS News that he tries not to think about his critics.

"I guess I've been so away from it all and our tent camp in Haiti that I haven't had an awful lot of time to pay attention to them," he said.

"Do I hope that those people die screaming of rectal cancer? Yeah. You know, but I'm not going to spend a lot of energy on it."

Penn added that his 16-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son joined him in Haiti to help with the relief effort.

"They're going to be my slaves while we're there," he joked. "I think they've had the experience, as I have, that the first person served by the service is the server. You know, there's nobody in the world that isn't looking for a kind of purpose in life, and tangible purpose is the most immediately recognisable.

"There's no time that you're over there, there's not something to do to lend a hand."
