Eric Cantona kicks off his theatre career

29 January 2010 [19:00] - TODAY.AZ
Eric Cantona has made his theatre debut in a production directed by his wife.
The Manchester United legend, who recently appeared as himself in the Ken Loach film Looking For Eric, plays the role of a man trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building in Face au Paradis or Faced With Paradise.

The premiere took place at the Theatre Marigny just off the Champs Elysees in Paris in front of an audience of 400 on Tuesday night.

One review of the show said that as there was little action in the play, just dialogue between two characters, there was nowhere for Cantona to hide.

"It could have gone wrong, but Cantona pulled it off," Timesonline said.

"He was not great - sometimes laboured, sometimes inaudible, often relying on Lorànt Deutsch, his partner on stage, to drive the storyline forward."

Cantona has acted in several movies, making a seemingly effortless jump from the pitch to the big screen.

Performing live to a theatre audience is new to him though, and somewhat of a gamble for the 43-year-old.

"My aim as a kid was to play my part in front of 80,000 people and I did it," he told Le Monde newspaper.

"So a 400-seat theatre... If you don't put yourself in danger, you don't know yourself."

Director Rachida Brakni chose the play especially to suit her husband.

"Eric is a worker, he's not afraid by a challenge, by the theatre and the public. He has big qualities, he has a lot of talent," she said.

"And it's not the woman who loves him who said it, it's the director."
