Famous Azerbaijani pianist Elchin Shirinov has just completed a new project, on which he worked together with foreign musicians.

Shirinov presented a new arrangement of famous Azerbaijani folk song  "Yellow Bride".  The new version of the song was recorded in France's Recall studio in partnership with jazzmen Linley Marz (bass), Eric Harland (drums), Avishai Cohen (double bass) and Yotam Silberstein (guitar).

"Sari Gelin" or  "Yellow Bride" is written in the literary genre known as bayati, which is one of the most popular forms of poetry in Azerbaijan. Bayati poetry is known for its reflective and introspective prose.

Sar? is an Azerbaijani adjective meaning "yellow". However, it can also mean "fair-skinned" or "blonde". The word gelin means a bride, with its root in the Azerbaijani word gel (meaning "come").

Elchin Shirinov  belongs to the new generation of Azerbaijani jazz musicians, who combine elements of post-bop jazz, blues and funk.

The pianist and composer was tutored by great musical talents such as Vagif Sadikhov, Aaron Goldberg, Kevin Hays, Jean Michel Pilc, Yakov Okun.

Throughout, Shirinov’s mellifluous extemporizations and pianistic pyrotechnics entranced the jazz cognoscenti in the crowd, particularly in his variations around the folksong Gul Achdi.

He went on to give a very individual interpretation of two of the most popular Azerbaijani folksongs Sari Gelin and Durna; and included his reflective self-penned compositions Waiting and Muse in his set, many of which featured the sound of the Melodica, a wind-operated keyboard that makes an accordion-like sound, which he balanced on top of the grand piano.
