Baku to bring together mugham masters and Argentine musicians

Azerbaijani and Argentinean musicians will jointly perform at the International Mugham Center on November 24.

The gala evening will bring together Victor Hugo Villena's band and Azerbaijani mugham masters, Azertac reported. 

The Tango and Mugham project is co-organized by Azerbaijan`s Culture and Tourism Ministry and the Embassy of Argentina.

Described by the New York Times as "expressing extremes of earthiness and ethereality", Victor Hugo performed with classical music stars like Baiba Skride Jan Vogler, Carrie Dennis at the international «Moritzurg Festival» .

Victor emigrated to France in 1999 . In that same year he joined Mosalini’s Grand Orchestre de Tango which took him on several tours throughout Europe, the United States and Canada. In October 2000, he appeared as a soloist in the Astor Piazzolla piece “Bando” on an album with this orchestra.

His varied musical interests have also brought him to the world of jazz, by a series of concerts with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra conducted by Carlos Franzetti. Also known on the electronicmusic scene as the bandoneonist of “Gotan Project”, he toured the United States, Canada and Brazil.

The musician collaborates with the elite of the contemporany tango argentine composers, including Sonia Possetti, Fernando Otero, Alejandro Schwarz, Gustavo Beytelmann, Leo Sujatovich , Daniel Binelli and Diego Schissi.

He peformed «Reves et Désirs», composed by Leo Sujatovich, with the «Orchestre Philarmonique Radio France» in July 2010, and created «Together» for Violoncello and Tango Quintet with Henri Demarquette.

He is the winner of the “Best Soloist” award in the National Competition of Cosquin (Argentina) in 1997.

Mugham as one of the oldest musical genres of the East has always attracted the attention of musicologists, critics of the world. During the period of independence of Azerbaijan, the national mugham performing arts has entered a new stage of development.

In modern history, crucial role in development of the Azerbaijani Mugham was played by numerous activities carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
