Central Botanical Garden hosts exhibition of roses

An opening ceremony of Roses’ Exhibition was held in the Central Botanical Garden, a shelter for terrific rare plants.

Indeed, this beautiful flower is loved by everyone, regardless of one's age and gender. In mythology, the rose is associated with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, who was often depicted adorned with roses around her head, feet and or neck. The rose symbolism, its hidden meaning, is known by almost everyone on some level and to some degree - otherwise it wouldn't be the most popularly sent flower on Valentine's Day or Women’s Day!

The exhibition showcases more than 350 rose varieties. The exhibition was aimed to promote the science of botany, show the achievements in this field and instill a sense of love and attention to the younger generation.

The exhibition was attended by the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences and representatives from national and international organizations.

President of ANAS, academic Akif Alizade stressed the importance of the exhibition. He said the new species of roses are the results of long scientific researches. He noted that such exhibitions should be held regularly. The public should be informed about the expanded cultivation of roses.

Valida Alizade, the director of the Institute of Botany, corresponding member of the Central Botanical Garden of the governor, spoke about the work carried out - over the past 35 years, local shorts hybridization and selection methods have been carried out.

She also talked about the Central Botanical Garden’s long and rich experience in the study of roses. She explained that the head of the Central Botanical Garden Floriculture Laboratory, Doctor of Biology Asaf Iskandarov has been engaged in the cultivation of varieties of roses for many years, stressing he achieved positive results in this regard.

In the end, the curator of the roses’ collection, Asaf Iskandarov, who worked in this field since 1970, talked about the future prospects of creating new types of roses.

He also shared information about different varieties of roses from the garden groups collected in the Central Botanical Garden. Iskandarov also said that these varieties were created mainly thanks to selection and hybridization.
