Baku enjoys hosting the Italian cinematography, one of the most popular in the world, as part of the Italian Films Festival which kicked off in Baku on October 20.

The festival is co-organized by Italian Association of N.I.C.E. and the Swiss Embassy in Azerbaijan. It is part of the Week of the Italian Language being held annually from October 20 to 25.

Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages? Samad Seyidov stressed that the festival indicates a high level of relations between the two countries in political, economic, educational and cultural spheres.

Italian ambassador Giampaolo Cutillo expressed hope that the festival will be part of the cultural life of the city.

The first film of the festival, "La Grande Bellezza", winner of the Oscar 2014, was played by Italian actress Anita Kravos, a guest of honor of the festival. Kravos played the leading part in the film, which was screened for the first time in Azerbaijan.

"I'm glad I came to Baku and presented here the Italian cinema. Baku fascinated me at first sight. Italian directors are interested in shooting films in Baku, one of them is Renato De Maria," Kravos stressed.

In "The Great Beauty" by Paolo Sorrentino, Kravos played the role of the modern artist Thalia Concept.

"In "The Great Beauty" I am a crazy artist. This is a small but very important role, talking about the essence of the film, art," she noted.

The main character of the film is an aging socialite, Jep Gambardella, who once wrote a famous novel in his twenties, only to retire into a comfortable life writing cultural columns and throwing parties in Rome.

After his 65th birthday anniversary, he walks through the ruins of the city, encountering various characters, reflecting on his life, his first love, and sense of unfulfillment

"This is a film about a man who is dealing with talent and art. This film is a high conversation about aesthetics, the dialogue about the beauty, art, inspiration and why all this is needed," Kravos underlined.

The festival will also screen "Nuovo cinema Paradiso" (Cinema "Paradiso"), "La Vita e bella" (Life is beautiful), "Il Capitale Umano" (Human capital) in Italian with English subtitles.
