Azerbaijan can save 850,000 tons of fuel oil per year using alternative energy

Using alternative energy sources, mainly small hydropower plants, Azerbaijan can save 850,000 tons of fuel per year, Institute of Radiation Problems Director Adil Garibov said.

He said the annual resource of wind power is 800 megawatt in Azerbaijan.

"There is great opportunity for the industrial use of wind in the Absheron region. On average 250 days of a year are windy in areas adjacent to Baku," Garibov said.

He said Azerbaijan has already installed three wind turbines. In addition, the construction of the first solar energy transformers has been started.

According to the department head of the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, Nazim Mammadov, receiving solar energy requires great investments unlike wind power.

He stressed that at present a plant for manufacturing solar panels is under construction in Azerbaijan.

The products will be produced here on the German quality license. Sale of these products is planned not only in Azerbaijan but also on the European market.
