Diamonds to be evaluated with new method in Azerbaijan

21 April 2011 [14:56] - TODAY.AZ
Evaluation system of diamonds is changed in Azerbaijan.

State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents has approved "GIA system for diamond evaluation" methodical instructions.

This document has been jointly prepared by the Finance Ministry’s State Control Service on Precious Stones and Metals and technical regulation and standardization department of State Committee on Standardization. The document determines evaluation method of diamonds in the country.

Note that, GIA system for diamond evaluation was founded by Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and is considered one of the main international standards for evaluation of precious stones in the world. According to this system the diamonds are evaluated on 4 parameters – carat, color, transparency and cut.

Diamond clarity is a quality of diamonds relating to the existence and visual appearance of internal characteristics of a diamond called inclusions, and surface defects called blemishes. Clarity is one of the four Cs of diamond grading, the others being carat, color, and cut. Inclusions may be crystals of a foreign material or another diamond crystal, or structural imperfections such as tiny cracks that can appear whitish or cloudy. The number, size, color, relative location, orientation, and visibility of inclusions can all affect the relative clarity of a diamond. A clarity grade is assigned based on the overall appearance of the stone under 10x magnification.

After this, the organs and other official organizations controlling the market will take this method as main.
