Azerbaijan studies options for building Baku-Sumgait railway

12 April 2011 [13:50] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry is to address the question of establishing a passenger rail between Baku and Sumgait by late 2011, Azerbaijani Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov said on Tuesday.

The ministry is considering the construction of a light railway, he said. The Ministry received three proposals, which include suggestions by French and Korean companies.

"This project is under development and involves the organization of a passenger transportation system between Baku and Sumgait to create roads and amenable conditions for developing public transport," Panahov said.

He said the length of the railway line is 28 kilometers. Panahov also spoke about an option to build a metro station in the direction of Sumgait. He said the form of transport, which will link two major cities of Azerbaijan, will be chosen in late 2011.
