SOCAR works to restore ecological balance

07 April 2011 [09:42] - TODAY.AZ
The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is implementing a number of major ecological projects to eliminate the consequences of long-term oil and gas field development in Azerbaijan, SOCAR head Rovnag Abdullayev said during a meeting with the participants of the 5th INEPO-Eurasia International Environment Protection Olympiad.

He said Azerbaijan has been dealing with oil production for 150 years. During the earlier period, oil was extracted by the open method, and the low-level technology led to pollution.

"Azerbaijan pays great attention to ecological issues. Now we are implementing major ecological projects to eliminate pollution," he said.

In particular, the SOCAR head told the Olympiad participants about large-scale operations undertaken by the company to restore the ecological balance, as well as to conduct intensive work to clean and plant greeneries in polluted lands on the Absheron Peninsula.

The 1st INEPO-Eurasia Olympiad was held in Baku in 2007. It was attended by students from 17 countries of the world. This year the Olympiad will take place on April 6-10. It is organized with the support of SOCAR, the Education Ministry, the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry, Cag Ogretim Isletmeleri and Public Ecological Association İNEPO-AVRASİYA.

This year the Olympiad will be attended by about 300 students from 33 countries.
