The new shipbuilding plant that will be built in Elet settlement of Baku will serve Azerbaijan and the Caspian littoral states and fully meet Azerbaijan’s need for ships, President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) Rovnag Abdullayev said.
He said SOCAR will need over 100 various ships for oil and gas operations in the coming 15 years.
"The present oil fleet of the company consists of the ships produced in the 70s, there is a need to update the vessel park and the plant will cope with it. The construction of the plant will be completed in the first half of 2013," he said.
SOCAR President said the plant will also produce warships and ships under the order of the Caspian Sea Shipping Company. Rovnag Abdullayev noted that the construction of the plant will cost $450 million.
"The tenders on the construction of the shipbuilding plant have already ended, the names of the winning companies will be known this month," he said.
