Azerbaijan has agreed to ship more gas to Europe via Turkey, an Azerbaijani energy ministry official announced Monday.

The official said it was not immediately clear whether Azerbaijan was intending to join Nabucco, a major pipeline project to bring natural gas from Central Asia and the Middle East to Europe to diversify the continent's energy sources and reduce Russia's dominance.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said Azerbaijan and Turkey will sign a deal Monday for the shipment of 11 billion cubic meters (400 billion cubic feet) of gas, some of which will be consumed in Turkey. The shipments would start by 2017. Turkey currently receives some 6 billion cubic meters (212 billion cubic feet) of gas from Azerbaijan and pumps some of that amount to Greece.
