World Bank suggests Azerbaijan to increase number of people with higher education up to 50%

08 April 2010 [15:55] - TODAY.AZ
The World Bank considers insufficient level of education in Azerbaijan as a key hindrance to country’s development.
World Bank country Manager for Azerbaijan Gregory Jedrzeiczak said that the number of people with higher education is very low, but it is formed historically and the situation cannot be changed at once.

“Many people don’t want to get educatation as it does not give great economic advantages, and cause questions of education term and quality of teacher staff. Today 17% of the population has higher education in Azerbaijan while this figure should be 50%,” Jedrzeiczak added.

As a result, the Bank proposes Azerbaijan to open higher education as India has done once.

“At the same time not only quantity changes, but also a system to ensure quality of education are necessary,” Jedrzeiczak said.

“For instance, the WB indicates that the country is lacking necessary number of certified auditors: their number is 50 while demanded figure is 5,000," he noted.
