Mexico demands explanation from Azerbaijan

06 May 2009 [14:48] - TODAY.AZ
Sources in Mexico state that they wrote a letter to the World Trade Organization (WTO) demanding an explanation from the countries that have imposed restrictions on Mexican imports of pork because of flu (now known as H1N1).
Minister of Economy of Mexico Gerardo Ruiz Mateos said such bans have no scientific basis and will not be permitted. Ruiz Mateos noted that the complaint was filed in the WTO against the eight countries that have imposed restrictions on Mexican imports, with the argument that the restrictions have no scientific basis.

The eight countries, according to the Economy Minister, include China, Russia, UAE, Ukraine, Bolivia, Ecuador, Honduras and Azerbaijan, according to BBC. "We will not allow unreasonable barriers to Mexican exports", said Ruiz Mateos at a press conference.

Accrding to him, these countries are not major trading partners of Mexico, and the action is aimed to prevent similar measures from other countries.

Notably, today Azerbaijan is not a member of the WTO.
