Alan Waddams: "I hope nothing will threaten to the perspective energy projects with Georgia's participation"

19 November 2008 [17:28] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with Alan Waddams, chief of representative of the European Commission in Azerbaijan.
- The European commission is a changeless participant of all four Caspian energy summits, but the final document of the recent summit - Baku declaration - is undersigned by this organization. How can it be explained?

- This is caused by our interest. Primarily, speaking about the participants of this summit, nine of the member-states were representing the European Union. The EU was also represented by commissioner on energy issues Andris Piebalgs. The forum participants discussed supplies of oil and gas to Europe, which, certainly, meets our interests.

- Are you satisfied with the results of the Baku summit?

- Yes, I think that this was a good summit. It gathered together many people, leaders that could discuss the interesting questions, both on the negotiation table and in the lobbies. The summit was effective.

- What are the main differences of this summit from the previous three for you?

- Much attention on this summit was paid to the southern corridor, connecting the Caspian region with Europe. This topic was this time discussed more than during the previous meetings. At the previous summit the focus was the Odessa -Brody pipeline. Thus, today we have two aspects of the Krakov process.

- Do you see any political obstacles on the way of the implementation of the Nabucco project and other potential routes of transportation of energy sources from the Caspian region to Europe bypassing Russia?

- (Laughing). This is a complicated issue. I do not participate in the talks on Nabucco, but this project envisions gas supply on the market of Central Europe. Certainly, therefore, the EU supports this project, like other projects in this direction, such as, for example, the Turkey-Greece-Italy pipeline.

As for the problems, yes, there are definite problems, but it is difficult to separate economy from policy in this case.

- Does Europe trust the routes of transportation of Caspian energy sources via Georgia after the events, which occurred in this country in August?

- This is also a complicated issue. Frankly speaking, I do not know whether it is true or not. Certainly, we can not rule it out that the Georgian events will never repeat again. Anyway, during these events BTC and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzirum pipelines did not suffer. I think we should be optimistic and hope that everything will be alright with the routes via Georgia.
