Azerbaijan taking 69th place on competitiveness index

Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.kz portal that Azerbaijan takes 69th place among 134 countries by the competitiveness growth index in 2008-2009 in the framework of the Global Competitiveness program.
Of the post-Soviet countries Russia is on the 51st place (58 in 2007-2008), Kazakhstan on 66th (61st), Azerbaijan on 69th (66), Georgia 90 (90), Armenia 98 (93), Moldova 95 (97), Tajikistan 116 (117), Kyrgyzstan 112 (119). Last year the Competitiveness Index also involved Uzbekistan which took the 62nd place, while the report for 2008-2009 lacks data on this country.

The research, published for the past 28 years, assessed the situation in 134 countries by way of a poll among business representatives.

100 companies were questioned in Kyrgyzstan, 193 in Kazakhstan and 99 in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are followed by Uganda, Paraguay, Zambia, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Mauritania, Ghana, Timor-Leshti, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Burundi and Chad.

While forming the index WEF used the World Development Indicators 2008 Online Database about the GDP structure of the country. The World Economic Forum is a noncommercial organization, founded in 1971.

While defining the index, such factors as institutional development, state of infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, state of health and education, innovations, effectiveness of financial markets were taken into account.

The United States, Switzerland and Denmark led the rating. The first ten on the top are also Sweden, Singapore, Finland, German, Netherlands, Japan and Canada.
