Tea crops fall 75.8% in Lenkoran, Azerbaijan

30 July 2008 [16:50] - TODAY.AZ
The results of the first half of this year fix deepening of crisis in Lenkoran tea-growing sector.
Day.Az reports with reference to the Statistical Services of Lenkoran that only 31.5 tons of tea leaves were gathered in Lenkoran in the first half of the year.

To compare, in the same period of the last year the crops made 130 tons of tea leaves. In other words, the crops have declined by 75.8% through a year.

Though the Executive powers of the region and German Technical Cooperation Foundation take definite steps to revive the Lenkoran tea-growing, prospects of the sphere development are not optimistic. Farmers are not attracted to the sector for a long-term perspective.

Some specialists consider that the way out of the situation could be the policy of "statism" in this sector, envisaging sale of consolidated state tea-growing enterprises.
