Rules of transborder transportation of hazardous wastes ratified in Azerbaijan

According to the press service for the Cabinet, these rules regulate import, export and transit transportations of hazardous wastes in Azerbaijan.

The document prohibits the importation of hazardous wastes with processing impossible, for the purpose of transit transportation, burial and neutralization.

The transit transportation of hazardous wastes is conducted in line with the legislation of Azerbaijan and provisions of international documents, to which the country is a party.

The document prohibits the transit transportation of hazardous wastes via Azerbaijan to a country which does not join the Basel convention on control over the transborder transportation of hazardous wastes and their disposal (except for cases of existence of an agreement on transborder transportation of hazardous wastes between the said country and Azerbaijan).

The importation, exportation and transit of hazardous wastes in Azerbaijan are conducted on the basis of the permission of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural resources under coordination with the Cabinet of Ministers. Exportation of such cargo from Azerbaijan without the agreement of the recipient country or the states, engaged in transit of hazardous wastes is prohibited.

In case illegal export or transit of hazardous wastes is revealed, the cargo will be returned to the sender country or its disposal will be carried within 30 days in the order stipulated by the Basel convention.
