UN World Food Programme asks donors to continue allocating funds for IDPs in Azerbaijan

11 January 2008 [14:26] - TODAY.AZ
The United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP) asked donors to allocate funds for assistance to IDPs in Azerbaijan, according to the official website of UN.

These people were driven away from their houses during Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.

WFP wanted $ 16 million from donors for carrying out a 2-year operation. The body has received nearly 70% of this amount as to present. Russia gave $2 million of food to internally displaced people (IDPs) in Azerbaijan. The commodities – 217.5 metric tons of vegetable oil and 2,016 metric tons of wheat flour – were purchased in Russia and will help feed 75,000 of the most vulnerable IDPs for four months.

The UN food agency is in process of handing over its caseload of 130,000 beneficiaries to the Government of Azerbaijan – which is already taking care of the first 55,000 – and plans to complete this operation by end of June 2008.
