WB team in Baku to inspect construction of Alat-Astara highway

World Bank’s team designing the Alat-Astara Second Highway Project headed by Olivier Le Ber are now in Baku to inspect upgrading of some sections of the Alat-Astara-Iranian border highway and discuss with government officials the prospects of construction of the third highway.

During the visit, WB mission will have some meetings in the Azerbaijan’s Transport Ministry and other respective government agencies.

The next stage of the Second Highway Project may be financed in the coming months.

The WB mission will stay in Azerbaijan until January 11.

The World Bank finances construction of Alat-Masally section of the Alat-Astara highway.

To this end, the WB will lend $106.1 million to the government of Azerbaijan. The remaining part of the highway will be constructed at the expense of the Asian Development Bank’s $106.1 million loan. The Government of Azerbaijan, in his turn, allocated $94 million on the Alat-Astara Second Highway Project.

Turkey’s Mak-Yol Insaat Turism and Ticaret construction company is a project contractor while Azerbaijan’s Azerinsaatservis LLC is a subcontractor.

Finland’s Finnroad firm is responsible for construction supervision.

The estimated project cost is $27.7 million. Construction term is 18 months. The Alat-Masally section of the Baku-Astara highway envisages construction of a new bridge and two overpasses. The four-lane road will be 15 meters in width.

Construction of the Alat-Astara highway is scheduled to be completed by late 2009.
