Economic Research Center: "Prices will rise in Azerbaijan in late December"

13 December 2007 [15:14] - TODAY.AZ
The Economic Research Center forecasts the rise in prices in Azerbaijan in late December.
The rise is caused by an increased demand of meat and other foodstuffs, which are necessary for the population to mark the Gurban and New Year holidays, as reported during a press conference, held by the center over results of the monitoring of Azerbaijan's economy Thurday.

By the recent calculations of the Economic Research Center, in November the index of consumer prices in Azerbaijan made up 3.5%, including 3.68% in Baku and 3.28% in the regions.

Thus, prices of bakery products have risen by 2.21%, dairy products by 4.37%, butter 11.27%, fruits and vegetables by 7.91%, sugar, tea and perfumes by 4.17%, fish and meatby 3.14% and drinks by 1.05%, clothes and footwear by 4.24%.

The Center specialists voiced concern over the rapid growth of inflation rate in our country, which obliges to conduct alternative calculations twice a month.

The said project is supported by the USAID. For the more exact definition of the dynamics of inflation processes, the center experts recommend the government to calculate not one minimal consumer busket of the needs of the Azerbaijani population, but several for various groups of population and with different number of goods and services in the said busket.

The director of the Center Gubad Ibadoglu regarded the recent resolution of the government on the duty-free import of currency in the amount of up to $ 10,000 from the country as a positive factor which influences positively the inflation processes in Azerbaijan.

At the same time, he said it is not enough for the complete liberalization of the economy of Azerbaijan.
