Companies with foreign capital not active in civil society development in Azerbaijan

01 June 2007 [13:15] - TODAY.AZ
The Coalition Supporting Civil Society and the National Confederation of Entrepreneurs (Employers) have today held a roundtable in Baku to discuss the part business play in civil society development in Azerbaijan.

Alakbar Mammadov, chair of the Confederation, said Azerbaijan are not enough experienced in the field of businesses' support for civil society.

"At the same time, violation of employers' rights is also caused by lack of experience in this field. There are more than 74,000 legal entities, 240,000 individuals and a total of more than 300,000 taxpayers engaged in entrepreneurship. Of these, 3,000 are companies with foreign investment," he noted.

He added that corruption is the main obstacle on the way of entrepreneurs, APA reports.

"A survey conducted by the Confederation concluded that officials open the way for those who are “close” (relative) to them or they themselves establish enterprise and impede businessmen’s penetration into the market," he concluded.

Established in 1999, Azerbaijan National Confederation of Entrepreneurs (Employers) join 3,500 entrepreneurs.
