Gas imports for Azerbaijan to be discussed in Moscow

21 December 2006 [11:09] - TODAY.AZ
Azeri, Russian officials will meet in Moscow on Dec. 22 to continue negotiations on gas supplies for Azerbaijan in 2007.

Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Premier Yagub Eyyubov will leave Baku for Moscow on Thursday, Gazprom officer in Baku Akif Hasanov told APA.

Azerbaijan is receiving 4.5 billion cu m of gas from Gasprom at a price of $110 per 1,000 cu m in 2006.

During the period January-November Azerbaijan imported 4.1bn cu m of Russian gas.

For 2007 Russia warned that it would charge Baku $230 for 1,000 cubic metres of gas, and trim down gas imports.

Baku rejected the proposal, saying it will stop importing Russian gas supplies from January 1 because it is unfavorable to use expensive Russian gas for electricity production.

Azerbaijan says it will reorient power plants to another fuel and look at its own resources and alternative potential to cover its demand if no agreement is reached with Gazprom.
