Azerfon to start early next year

Azerfon LLC, the third GSM operator in Azerbaijan, will start up in the first quarter of next year, Communications and Information technologies Minister Ali Abbasov said.

"Azerfon wants to start in late this year. The start-up can delay due to some problems. But, I think the delay will not go beyond the first quarter of next year," he said.

The Minister said high-tech services are very expensive and the ministry wants to trim down the prices. He also said the telephone bills have been reduced recently.

"We change call tariffs frequently, in particular the prices of long-distance calls. We cut the prices twice during past two years. We don’t plan to reduce long-distance call prices in the nearest future," he said.

Ali Abbasov said rural areas and territories near the frontline will have been provided with new telephone exchanges by 2008.

During the first quarter of next year electronic exchange project will be complete.

"We planed to complete the project by the end of this year. But, for some reasons, the activities have been deferred for early next year. Electronic exchange system program will be 100% compete throughout Azerbaijan in 2008," he underscored, APA reports.

To note AZERFON LLC has been granted a license by Ministry of Communication and Information Technology of Azerbaijan Republic dated 28.12.2005 for the provision of GSM mobile communications services in 900/1800 MHz band throughout the territory of Azerbaijan.

Azerfon's stockholders are Aztelecom (10%), Siemens (30%), British ERSTEL Azerbaijan Ltd (30%) and CELLEX Communication (30%).
