Georgia keen on importing gas and electricity from Azerbaijan

Georgia plans to be maximally ready for winter. Georgia can import electrical energy from 5 neighboring countries-Azerbaijan, Russia, Armenia, Iran and Turkey, Georgian fuel and energy minister Nika Gilauri told at briefing yesterday.

According to Tehran agreement, Georgia will import 50-MWatt -electrical energy from Iran through Armenia in winter. The imports will be rise to 350-MWatt later.

"It will be possible after constructing high-voltage power lines," he said.

Georgian energy system operator KOGS and Azerenergy have an agreement on import of 100-200 MW-electricity from Azerbaijan in emergency. The same agreement has also been signed with Turkey (up to 100 MW).

Georgia will repay the electric imports to Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey in winter with electricity, APA reports.

Gilauri also said that Georgia will continue negotiating with Iran on diversification of gas imports. Georgia's gas consumption is forecasted to be 1.8bn cu m next year, of which 250m cu m will be available in Shah Deniz Project (Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum).

"But, It is not ruled out that additional natural gas will be imported from Iran and Azerbaijan in 2007," he said.
