U.S. ready to support Azerbaijan's accession to WTO

16 October 2006 [12:36] - TODAY.AZ
A workshop took place today, examining problems of Azerbaijan's industry priorities development within Technical Cooperation Program for Azerbaijan by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and World Trade Organization (WTO).

Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev said that US Government, the UN, and other international organizations gave great support to Azerbaijan in this process.

US ambassador to the WTO, Peter Allgeier, said Azerbaijan's accession on the great way and is not easy. Highly appreciating President Ilham Aliyev's August decree on intensification of the accession to the WTO, Peter Allgeier said that Azerbaijan's membership to the WTO will help Azerbaijan's economy integrate into the world.

"WTO members have to set discrimination aside, ensure transparency, decrease the government privileges to the agriculture etc. The membership has three stipulations; conformation of the legislation to the WTO requirements, determination of the list of tariffs for imports and determination of the attitude to the service."

Peter Allgeier thinks that legislation on export, phytosanitary control, licenses, standards and intellectual property should be reviewed. "We want the tariffs for imports of medical equipment to be maximally 5%."

He also stressed that the USA is ready to give any support for Azerbaijan’s accession to the WTO. APA
