Polish economy minister: "Azerbaijan a key energy partner for Poland"

12 September 2006 [20:10] - TODAY.AZ
The southern Caucasus state of Azerbaijan is a key energy partner for European Union newcomer Poland, Polish Economy Minister Piotr Wozniak said Tuesday following talks in Warsaw with a senior Azeri government official.

Visiting Azeri Economic Development Minister Geydar Babayev and Wozniak convened the first meeting of a Polish-Azeri inter-governmental committee focused on economic cooperation, particularly regarding oil sales.

Oil is Azerbaijan's top export. Eager to ease its heavy reliance on Russian energy supplies, European Union Poland is now diversifying its fuel suppliers and seeking ways to access Azeri crude.

Talks focused on the future possibility of pumping Azeri oil shipped into Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odessa to Poland via the Odessa-Brody-Plock pipeline still under construction, Deutsche Presse Agentur reports.
