Round table on WTO entrance held in Baku

A round table devoted to questions of membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) took place in Baku, September 6-8.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the government of Azerbaijan arranged the action for government officials of the countries-members of the Special Program of the United Nations for Economy of Central Asia (SPECA).

Now, the government of Azerbaijan studies experience of the various countries with a view of maintenance of acceptance of the country in membership of WTO on the most favorable conditions.

In action, alongside with Azerbaijan, were also attending other members of SPECA - representatives of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, diplomats of these states in Geneva, engaged in WTO affairs, including permanent representatives of Azerbaijan and Afghanistan at WTO, and diplomats of Oman and Georgia in Geneva, being WTO members. The round table brought together about 50 representatives.

The deputy foreign minister of Azerbaijan, the vice-chairman of the governmental commission concerning preparation of membership in WTO Mahmud Mammadguliyev has called participants to take active participation in discussions.

Official representative UNCTAD Norbert Lebale has expressed gratitude to the government of Azerbaijan for effective cooperation, having emphasized importance of studying of various experiences for the highest achievements during acceptance in WTO membership. N. Lebale has stated that the structure represented by him and henceforth is ready to cooperate with the government of Azerbaijan.

On action, discussed were the corresponding questions, concerning experience of Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and Oman, as a whole of this process and a round of new trade negotiations of WTO members, named at present Doha Diary of Development, capital of Qatar.
