Azerphone to become operational in Fall

Joint venture Azerphone continues installing base stations for mobile telephone services.

The Ministry of Communications & Information Technologies reported that Azerphone which was given zone code 070 is to begin services this autumn, Sharg informs.

"At primary stage Azerphone service range will cover only Baku," the Ministry said.

The Azerphone's shareholders are: Aztelekom (10%) on behalf of the MCIT, Germany's Siemens (30%) and British investments companies Stel Selex (together: 60%). The Ministry made a decision to license Azerphone for GSM-1800 megahertz at the end of December of 2005. For the next two years Azerphone is planning to invest $300 million in Azerbaijan.

Currently GSM mobile services are rendered in the country by JVs Azercell (Azerbaijan/Turkey) and Bakcell (Azerbaijan/Israel).
